The £2m deal was awarded via the SEWSCAP4 framework and covers the design of a 300-place school for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties and autism.
The new-build facility will be developed around a mile from the school’s current site on Ewenny Road, relocating to the Island Farm area.
The full build was delayed after the original budgets rose from £34m to around £55m. It was previously due for completion in 2026 but will now run to the 2027–28 academic year.
Bridgend County Borough Council leaders said the scheme will boost capacity and introduce modern facilities including a library, coffee shop, and potentially a swimming pool, alongside two five-bedroom residential blocks and a replacement care facility for Harwood House.
Kier beat three rivals to land the design stage. The main NEC4 construction contract – capped at £53.5m – will follow in a separate award after design work is completed and approved.
